By 1862, 67 coal mines were operating in Belleville and the surrounding two miles, making St. Clair County Illinois' leading coal producer. Belleville's early industrial development was possible because of an apparently inexhaustible supply of labor and bituminous coal. Belleville's keen involvement in labor organizations was closely aligned with the dangers and needs of thousands of men and boys who worked those early mines.
